Winning projects make significant use of masonry and are notable for innovation, cost-saving methods and environmental considerations. The projects are featured in the February 2002 issue of the magazine.
The Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse is recognized in the high-rise category, which includes hotels, apartment buildings and office buildings over five stories tall. Completed in 2000, the 29-story, 1,037,632-square-foot courthouse features columns and domes-trademarks of St. Louis architecture. Designed by St. Louis-based HOK and built by the General Services Administration for the U.S. Department of Justice, the structure is a modern-day expression of regionalism and federalism.
The exterior of the building consists of pre-cast concrete cladding punctuated by large expanses of glass and is topped by a massive stainless steel dome, blending traditional and contemporary design themes. Leonard Masonry was responsible for all masonry on the building, including installing all granite pavers, granite steps, cast stone concrete site walls and cast stone planters. In addition, Leonard Masonry created the building's distinctive cast stone balustrade. The lobby of the building features eight 34-foot-high Italian limestone columns and walls consisting of limestone panels, polished and honed granite and polished marble panels. Leonard Masonry also crafted granite steps leading up to the mezzanine.
Founded in 1959, Leonard Masonry, Inc. has grown to be the largest masonry contractor in St. Louis and is recognized for its fine craftsmanship and on-time work delivery within budget. Ranked as the sixth largest masonry contractor in the United States by Engineering News-Record (ENR), Leonard Masonry is a four-generation, family-owned business. It has been the masonry contractor on many of St. Louis' landmark structures, including the Missouri Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Unity Health, and Anheuser-Busch Hall at the Washington University School of Law.
